Ian Maccabe
My aim with these paintings is to produce a cleaner, more considered technique, with a continuity of style and composition.
I initially make small painted paper collages with which I can compose my image by, as Matisse said, cutting into pure colour. I then arrange, by trial and error, the chosen shapes into a composition that ultimately satisfies me.
At first I tried to achieve these images in a painterly style, but eventually the hard edge came to the fore, as if that’s the way the paintings wanted to be.
The clean simple style means that colour is paramount: I mix my colours very carefully, making sure the tone is just right.
